5 ways to stay safe online

5 email safety tips and best practices

Email has become one of the primary methods of communication, but with data leaks from social media and e-commerce sites, millions of passwords and emails have been leaked online.

While email is convenient, efficient, and essential to our lives, it also carries certain risks, especially when it comes to sharing documents, downloads, identity theft, viruses, and malware. To help ensure the safety and security of your personal and business communications, here are five email safety tips and best practices you should follow.

Tip 1: Use a Strong Password

Most email providers, such as Gmail and Outlook, require users to create a password when they first sign up for an account. Weak passwords are a major security risk and make it easy for hackers to access your email account. As such, you should always use a strong and unique password. This means using a combination of upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols and ensuring it’s longer than eight characters. You should also avoid using words that are easy to guess, such as your name or birthdate.

Tip 2: Enable Two-Factor Authentication

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security to your email account. When 2FA is enabled, you’ll be required to enter an additional code or PIN when logging in, in addition to your password. This code will usually be sent to your mobile phone and can only be used once. This means that even if someone were to get access to your password, they’d still be unable to access your email without the 2FA code.

Tip 3: Use a Secure Website

When accessing your email, you should always use a secure website, as this will help protect your data and keep it private. You can tell if a website is secure by looking for the ‘https’ at the start of the website address. This indicates that the website is encrypted and your data is safe.

Tip 4: Be Wary of Unsolicited

Emails Unsolicited or spam emails can be a security risk, as they can contain malicious links or attachments. It’s essential to be wary of any unsolicited emails and never click on any suspicious links or attachments. If you’re unsure about the legitimacy of an email, you should always contact the sender to verify its legitimacy.

Tip 5: Update Your Software

Internet browsers, as well as email clients and mobile operating systems, periodically release updates and patches that help to plug security holes. It’s important to regularly check for updates and install them as soon as they become available. This helps keep your software up to date and can help protect you against the latest cyber threats.

These five tips are essential for keeping your email safe and secure. Following these steps can help to protect you against cyber-attacks, identity theft, and other security issues. However, it’s important to remember that no amount of safety tips and best practices can completely protect you from all threats. Therefore, it’s also important to be aware of the latest cyber threats and take steps to protect yourself against them.
